Overview

Dental pulp is the specialized connective tissue located within the central cavity of the tooth, surrounded by dentin (StatPearls: Anatomy, Head and Neck, Tooth Pulp). It consists of a complex mixture of nerves, blood vessels, and odontogenic cells, most notably odontoblasts, which are responsible for dentin formation, and dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) that possess regenerative potential (PubMed: PMID 25605910). The primary biological role of the dental pulp is to maintain tooth vitality, provide sensory feedback, and respond to injury through the production of tertiary dentin (PubMed: PMID 21414311). In the context of dental therapeutics, the pulp and its constituent cells are the focus of endodontic treatments and regenerative procedures aimed at preserving tooth structure and function (NIH: MedlinePlus). While Dental pulp and odontogenic cells refers to a tissue and cell population rather than a single molecular target, various dental materials and drugs interact with these cells to modulate inflammation and promote healing (PubMed: PMID 30208163).
