Pseudogenes are common features in genomic DNA, typically arising from duplication or mutation of protein-coding genes, and do not contribute to disease or drug response. By contrast, the **functional ATN1 gene** is associated with dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy when a CAG trinucleotide repeat expansion occurs, but the pseudogene itself is biologically inert and not relevant to therapy or diagnostics.
