Dentin Desensitizing Agent

A dentin desensitizing agent is a general term for any topical agent used to reduce the symptoms of dentin hypersensitivity, which typically manifests as sharp pain from exposed dentin after thermal, tactile, or osmotic stimulation. These agents do not target a specific biomolecule but instead achieve clinical effect by occluding (blocking) dentinal tubules—thereby preventing fluid movement—or by reducing nerve fiber excitability, usually through potassium ion penetration. The class includes a wide range of substances with different chemical compositions and mechanisms, such as potassium salts, fluorides, oxalates, calcium phosphates, arginine, and some resin-based sealants or bonding agents. Gluma desensitizer (containing HEMA and glutaraldehyde) exemplifies a product combining protein precipitation and tubule sealing.
