Overview

The dentin-pulp complex refers to the tightly interrelated anatomical and functional unit formed by the dentin (a mineralized connective tissue that makes up the bulk of the tooth) and the dental pulp (a soft, vascularized connective tissue at the tooth center). Odontoblasts, the main cells of this complex, line the border of the pulp and extend processes into the dentin, where they are responsible for forming and maintaining the dentinal structure and its sensitive, responsive nature. The two tissues maintain tooth vitality, mediate responses to injury or infection, and are jointly the focus of dental regenerative and reparative therapies. While essential for dental health, the dentin-pulp complex is not itself a therapeutic target but is the subject of innovative tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications.
