Overview

The **dentin-pulp complex** is an integrated structural and functional unit within the tooth, comprising the mineralized dentin and the underlying soft connective tissue pulp. It serves as the primary barrier and first line of defense against invading **bacterial cells** during dental caries and other infections. Odontoblasts at the dentin-pulp interface detect microbial products and initiate immune and inflammatory responses, producing antimicrobial peptides and recruiting immune cells. Advanced invasion may result in pulp inflammation, necrosis, and periapical disease if host defenses fail to contain bacterial threats[1][2][3][5]. The interactions between the dentin-pulp complex and bacterial cells form the basis for understanding pulp pathologies and developing bioactive materials for pulp capping, repair, and regeneration. This is a tissue-level process, not a single druggable molecular target.
