Dentin-pulp tissue interface

Overview

The dentin-pulp tissue interface is the boundary within a tooth where the mineralized dentin meets the specialized connective tissue of the pulp. It is structurally defined by a layer of columnar odontoblasts, which have cellular processes that extend into the dentinal tubules. This interface plays crucial roles in the development and maintenance of dentin, sensory perception (including pain), and immune response to irritation or infection. Injury or disease at this interface, such as from caries or trauma, can lead to inflammation, pain, and loss of tooth vitality. Unlike other named targets, the interface is not a single molecule but rather a complex, dynamic tissue junction vital for tooth health and function.

Mechanism of action

Not a drug target; dental materials may promote reparative dentin by stimulating odontoblasts.

Disease associations

Dental caries (infection and inflammation spread at interface)Pulpitis (inflammation of pulp often initiated at interface)Tooth pain and hypersensitivity (impacts sensory nerve exposure)Other

Safety considerations

Not a molecular target; challenges relate to infection spread, pulp exposure during dental treatment, and maintaining interface integrity during restorative procedures.
