Dentin tubule occlusion refers to the process of sealing or blocking open dentinal tubules within the dentin of teeth, a method widely used to treat dentin hypersensitivity[2][3][4]. The principle is based on the hydrodynamic theory, where pain arises from fluid movement inside these microscopic tubules that stimulates nerve fibers in the dental pulp when exposed to external stimuli such as temperature changes or touch[1][2]. By occluding the tubules with materials like calcium carbonate, hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass, or silver diammine fluoride, fluid flow is interrupted, reducing stimulation of the nerves and alleviating pain[2][3][4][6][7]. Occlusion may be achieved through topical agents, restorative cements, or laser therapy. While effective, the occlusion can sometimes be reversed (e.g., after acid challenge), and aged dentin with occluded tubules may have lower fracture resistance due to changes in the mineral and organic composition[5][6]. Dentin tubule occlusion is a strategy, not a discrete molecular target, and should not be classified as a protein, receptor, or enzyme.
