Overview

Dentinal tubule sealing refers to a set of techniques and agents used to physically occlude or block the microscopic tubules in the dentin of the tooth that become exposed due to wear, caries, or dental procedures[1][2][4]. Sealing these tubules is crucial for preventing the hydrodynamic movement of fluid that triggers nerve endings and causes hypersensitivity, as well as for protecting the pulp from bacterial ingress and toxic substances[5]. This can be accomplished via biomimetic dental adhesives (which form a hybrid resin-dentin layer), inorganic tubule-occluding agents (like stannous fluoride, calcium phosphosilicate, or nano-hydroxyapatite), varnishes, or desensitizers[1][3][4]. Dentinal tubule sealing is a clinical goal rather than a single, targetable biomolecule or receptor, and is not considered a therapeutic target in the conventional sense of receptor, enzyme, or ion channel pharmacology[1][2].
