Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the hereditary material in nearly all living organisms, composed of two antiparallel strands forming a double helix and made up of four types of nucleotides: adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine[1][2][3][5]. In eukaryotic cells, DNA is compartmentalized within the cell nucleus and encodes genes that direct all cellular functions, including the synthesis of RNAs and proteins[4]. DNA itself is a target for numerous drugs but is not typically considered a specific "therapeutic target" in the way that proteins such as receptors, enzymes, or transporters are; rather, drugs may target DNA directly to disrupt genetic processes in diseases such as cancer or viral infections.
