House Dust Mite Allergen

Molecular classification
Protein, Cysteine protease, Allergen
01

Overview

House dust mite allergens are proteins found in the feces and body parts of house dust mites. These allergens trigger IgE-mediated Type I hypersensitivity reactions, leading to symptoms of allergic rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. Key allergens include Der p 1, Der f 1, Der p 2, Der f 2, and Der p 7. Der p 1 is a cysteine protease that disrupts epithelial barriers. Group 2 and 7 allergens share structural similarities with proteins involved in innate immunity pathways.

Mechanism of action

Antihistamines block histamine receptors to reduce allergy symptoms. Corticosteroids reduce inflammation. Immunotherapy desensitizes the individual by gradually increasing exposure to the allergen.
