Overview

Dermal and subcutaneous tissue refers to the layers of the skin located beneath the epidermis, consisting of the dermis and the hypodermis (StatPearls, 2023). The dermis provides structural integrity and elasticity through a dense extracellular matrix of collagen and elastin, while the subcutaneous tissue primarily functions in energy storage, thermoregulation, and mechanical cushioning (NIH, 2023). This tissue complex is a critical site for the administration of various therapeutics, such as insulin and monoclonal antibodies, via subcutaneous injection (PubMed, 2021). However, 'Dermal and Subcutaneous Tissue' is an anatomical classification rather than a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme. It is the site of numerous pathologies, including cellulitis, panniculitis, and various skin cancers, but pharmacological interventions within these tissues target specific proteins or cells rather than the tissue as a whole (NCI, 2023). Consequently, it does not possess a singular mechanism of action or a specific set of interacting drugs in the context of molecular pharmacology.
