Overview

Hair follicle dermal papilla cells are a specialized population of mesenchymal cells located at the base of the hair follicle, essential for hair follicle formation, regeneration, and cycling. They orchestrate the growth and cycling of hair by exchanging molecular signals with surrounding epithelial cells, regulate follicle size and hair growth phase, and are critically involved in hair loss conditions such as androgenetic alopecia, where androgen signaling through the DPCs triggers follicle miniaturization. DPCs are a focus of regenerative medicine for hair restoration, but they are not in themselves "drug targets"; rather, they act as instructive niches for the epithelial stem cells that produce the hair shaft
