Descending Monoaminergic Pain Inhibitory Pathway

Molecular classification
Neural pathway, Neuromodulatory system
01

Overview

The descending monoaminergic pain inhibitory pathway is a neural circuit originating in the brainstem (locus coeruleus and rostral ventromedial medulla) that projects to the spinal cord. It modulates pain by releasing noradrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, inhibiting nociceptive transmission. This pathway is a key target for drugs used to treat chronic and neuropathic pain.
