Desensitization is the process by which the responsiveness of a cell, receptor, or system to a biochemical stimulus decreases after continuous or repeated exposure to that stimulus. It commonly refers to mechanisms such as receptor phosphorylation, internalization, or other changes that temporarily reduce receptor signaling efficacy in response to persistent agonist presence. Desensitization is fundamental in signal transduction pathways and is observed across diverse receptor types, including ion channels (like the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor), G protein-coupled receptors (such as beta-adrenergic receptors), and immune receptors. It is not a discrete molecular entity but a regulatory phenomenon emergent from complex molecular interactions. There is something fundamentally incorrect about treating "Desensitization" as a molecular target or receptor. It is a biological phenomenon, not an individual gene, protein, or ligand that could be directly targeted or listed in a molecular registry.
