Deuterosome assembly protein 1 (DEUP1) is a scaffold protein that acts as the key structural component of the deuterosome—a non-membranous organelle that promotes de novo centriole amplification in multiciliated cells[1][2][3][6]. DEUP1 is specifically expressed during multiciliogenesis, where it self-assembles through its N-terminal coiled-coil domains to form stable condensates serving as the structural core of deuterosomes[1]. It interacts with centrosomal protein 152 (Cep152) and recruits polo-like kinase 4 (PLK4), both master regulators of centriole biogenesis, thereby enabling the formation of multiple centrioles in differentiated multiciliated cells[1][3]. DEUP1 is not a typical enzyme, receptor, or transporter, and currently is not considered a therapeutic target. There is no known clinical use as a biomarker or a drug interaction; its main recognized role is fundamental to the biology of multiciliated cells.
