Overview

DHX9 antisense RNA 1 (DHX9-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the DHX9 locus. Long noncoding RNAs such as DHX9-AS1 do not encode proteins, but can regulate gene expression at transcriptional or post-transcriptional levels, including via epigenetic mechanisms or by acting as decoys or scaffolds for regulatory proteins. DHX9-AS1 and similar lncRNAs are increasingly recognized as having roles in cancer biology, often affecting cell proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis, and other malignant behaviors, though details for DHX9-AS1 specifically remain limited in comparison to better-characterized lncRNAs. Importantly, DHX9-AS1 is not a protein, receptor, or enzyme, and does not directly interact with drugs, though it may one day be considered for drug discovery efforts in RNA therapeutics.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable for drugs; functions by regulating transcription and possibly modulating chromatin state.

03

Biological functions

Gene expression regulationPotential epigenetic regulationModulation of transcription
04

Disease associations

Cancer (based on studies showing lncRNAs from this family can act as oncogenes or tumor suppressors)Other roles not firmly established
05

Safety considerations

None specifically reported; as a noncoding RNA, direct targeting raises challenges including delivery, off-target effects, and specificity.
06

Biomarkers

DHX9-AS1 and similar lncRNAs may serve as potential biomarkers for cancer prognosis or progression in research, but none are established for therapeutic monitoring.
