Spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase 1 (SAT1), also known as diamine acetyltransferase 1 or SSAT, is a key enzyme in polyamine metabolism. It catalyzes the N(1)-acetylation of spermidine and spermine, which are essential polyamines involved in cell growth, chromatin structure maintenance, and other cellular functions. SAT1 acts as a rate-limiting enzyme in the catabolic pathway of polyamine metabolism. Alterations in SAT1 activity have been linked to cell growth, cancer, and metabolism. It serves as both a biomarker candidate for disease states like cancer and a potential therapeutic target.
