Overview

Diatrizoic acid (Amidotrizoic acid) is a synthetic, iodinated benzoic acid derivative used almost exclusively as a radiopaque contrast agent for X-ray based medical imaging procedures. It is normally supplied and administered as its sodium or meglumine salt to enhance solubility. In clinical practice, it is used to visualize anatomical structures in the gastrointestinal tract, vascular system, and urinary tract during procedures such as angiography, urography, and gastrointestinal series. Its biological action relies on the high atomic number of iodine, which absorbs X-rays efficiently, thereby improving the differentiation of tissues and fluids on radiographic images. Diatrizoic acid has no endogenous physiological function and does not act as a target for drugs. Its administration is associated with potential risks such as allergic reactions, nephrotoxicity (especially in renal impairment), and rarely, thyroid dysfunction. It is not considered a biomarker or a molecular target, but rather an exogenous diagnostic tool.
