Overview

"Dietary energy metabolism" is not a specific molecule, receptor, enzyme, or druggable target. Instead, it refers to the collection of biochemical processes by which living organisms convert nutrients from food—such as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins—into usable cellular energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)[2][5][6]. These processes include digestion and absorption of nutrients; catabolic pathways like glycolysis, beta oxidation of fatty acids, and the citric acid cycle; as well as anabolic pathways that build new molecules for growth and repair[3][4][7]. The regulation of dietary energy metabolism involves numerous enzymes, hormones (such as insulin and thyroid hormones), transporters, signaling molecules, and metabolic intermediates. Disruptions in these processes are associated with diseases such as obesity, diabetes mellitus type 2/metabolic syndrome (energy excess or dysregulation), hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism (altered basal metabolic rate), among others[9].
