Overview

Dietary fiber refers to the portion of plant-derived food that cannot be completely broken down by human digestive enzymes. It is a type of carbohydrate that resists digestion and absorption in the small intestine. Instead, it passes into the large intestine where it may undergo partial or complete fermentation by gut microbiota. Dietary fiber exerts several physiological effects, including increasing stool bulk, slowing gastric emptying, modulating blood glucose, reducing serum cholesterol, and serving as a substrate for beneficial gut bacteria. High dietary fiber intake is associated with a lower risk of various chronic diseases.
