Overview

"Dietary protein source" is not a specific molecule, receptor, or therapeutic target. Instead, it refers broadly to the various foods that provide protein in the human diet. These include both animal-based sources (such as meat, poultry, fish/seafood, eggs, and dairy products) and plant-based sources (such as legumes, nuts, seeds, soy products like tofu and tempeh, whole grains)[1][3][4]. Proteins from these dietary sources are made up of 20 different amino acids; nine of these are essential and must be obtained from food because the body cannot synthesize them[3][4]. Animal-derived proteins generally provide all essential amino acids ("complete" proteins), while most plant-derived proteins are "incomplete," lacking one or more essential amino acids—though combining different plant proteins throughout the day can meet requirements for all essentials[1][7]. Dietary protein is crucial for tissue structure and function throughout the body—including muscle maintenance/repair—and serves as a source of energy. The quality of dietary protein is evaluated based on its digestibility and its content of indispensable (essential) amino acids; methods such as PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score) or DIAAS (Diges­tible Indispensable Amino Acid Score) are used for this purpose[6]. The choice of dietary protein source also affects gut microbiota composition and metabolic health outcomes[2]. Because "dietary protein source" does not refer to a single molecular entity but rather a nutritional category encompassing many types of food ingredients with varying molecular compositions and biological effects depending on context—it should not be considered a canonical drug target or receptor.
