Differentiation potential refers to the ability of a cell, especially a stem cell, to develop into different specialized cell types[5][3]. Potency is categorized based on the range of cell types a stem cell can generate: Totipotency (all cell types including extraembryonic tissues), pluripotency (all cell types of the body), multipotency (multiple, but limited, closely related cell types), oligopotency (a few cell types), and unipotency (one cell type)[5][3][4][9]. Differentiation potential is controlled by gene expression, epigenetic status, and signals from the environment, such as growth factors, extracellular matrix cues, and physical forces[4][7][3]. In disease, loss or inappropriate maintenance of differentiation potential is linked to cancer, as well as developmental and regenerative disorders[2][7]. Differentiation potential itself is assessed in stem cell biology to determine application for regenerative medicine or disease modeling—with biomarkers including key transcription factors and epigenetic marks[5][4][9].
