Fibersol-2 is a commercially available digestion-resistant maltodextrin (RMD), a type of soluble, non-viscous dietary fiber derived from cornstarch through controlled enzymatic hydrolysis [3, 4]. It is characterized by a unique set of glycosidic linkages that make it resistant to human digestive enzymes, allowing it to pass through the upper gastrointestinal tract and reach the colon intact [10]. In the large intestine, Fibersol-2 functions as a prebiotic, undergoing fermentation by beneficial bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are vital for maintaining gut health and regulating metabolism [2, 7]. Clinically, it is utilized for its ability to moderate postprandial blood glucose and lipid levels, improve intestinal regularity, and enhance satiety via the stimulation of hormones such as GLP-1 and PYY [3, 5, 6]. Emerging research also highlights its potential anti-tumor activity, specifically its ability to inhibit the growth of colorectal cancer cells by inducing mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and activating p53-dependent apoptotic pathways [1, 11]. Recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA, Fibersol-2 is a common ingredient in functional foods, beverages, and dietary supplements intended to improve metabolic and digestive health [4].
