Digoxin

Molecular classification
Cardiac glycoside, Inotropic agent, Group V antiarrhythmic
01

Overview

Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside medication used to treat heart failure and atrial fibrillation. It inhibits the Na+/K+ ATPase pump, leading to increased intracellular calcium and enhanced myocardial contractility. It also slows conduction through the AV node, helping to control heart rate. Digoxin has a narrow therapeutic window and requires careful monitoring due to the risk of toxicity.

Mechanism of action

Reversibly inhibits the sodium-potassium ATPase (Na+/K+ ATPase) enzyme in cardiac myocytes, leading to increased intracellular sodium and calcium concentrations, resulting in enhanced myocardial contractility and slowed conduction through the AV node.
