Overview

Dihydropteroate synthetase (DHPS) is a key enzyme in the folate biosynthesis pathway of Plasmodium species, including *Plasmodium falciparum* and *Plasmodium vivax*, the causative agents of malaria. DHPS catalyzes the condensation of 6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin pyrophosphate (DHPPP) with p-aminobenzoic acid (pABA) to form 7,8-dihydropteroate, a precursor for folate derivatives essential for parasite survival. DHPS is targeted by sulfa drugs such as sulfadoxine and dapsone, and resistance arises due to point mutations in the dhps gene.
