Overview

Dipeptidase 1 (DPEP1), also known as renal dipeptidase, is a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme primarily responsible for hydrolyzing dipeptides. It is most abundantly expressed in the kidney, particularly on the brush border of proximal tubular cells and peritubular capillaries. It functions as a homodimer and contains binuclear zinc ions critical for catalysis. Beyond peptide hydrolysis, DPEP1 also acts as an adhesion receptor facilitating neutrophil recruitment into inflamed tissues. Its activity impacts glutathione homeostasis, leukotriene processing, and can hydrolyze certain beta-lactam antibiotics.
