Overview

Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP-4), also known as CD26, is a serine exopeptidase that cleaves dipeptides from the N-terminal end of polypeptides. It plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism by degrading incretin hormones like GLP-1 and GIP. DPP-4 is also involved in immune regulation and other physiological processes. It is a therapeutic target for type 2 diabetes, with DPP-4 inhibitors being used to enhance insulin secretion.

Mechanism of action

DPP-4 inhibitors block the degradation of incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), leading to increased insulin secretion and reduced glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner.
