Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV (DPP4) is a serine exopeptidase that removes N-terminal dipeptides from polypeptides with proline or alanine in the penultimate position. It exists as a type II transmembrane glycoprotein and also in a soluble form. DPP4 plays crucial roles in glucose metabolism by degrading incretins, immune regulation through T-cell activation, and cell migration. It is a therapeutic target for type II diabetes, with DPP4 inhibitors (gliptins) used to improve glycemic control.
DPP4 inhibitors prolong incretin action to improve glycemic control by preventing the degradation of incretins like GLP-1 and GIP.
