The diphtheria toxin is a potent exotoxin produced by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It inhibits eukaryotic protein synthesis by ADP-ribosylating elongation factor 2 (eEF2). The toxin consists of two fragments: Fragment A, which possesses the catalytic activity, and Fragment B, which mediates binding to the host cell receptor (HB-EGF) and translocation of Fragment A into the cytosol.
