Target intelligence / Profile preview

Diphtheria Toxin Protein Carrier (CRM197)

Target
CRM197
Molecular classification
Toxin (detoxified), Protein Carrier
01

Overview

CRM197 is a genetically detoxified, non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin used as a carrier protein in conjugate vaccines. It enhances the immunogenicity of polysaccharides and haptens, making them effective antigens for immune response. The G52E mutation abolishes ADP-ribosyltransferase activity while preserving immunogenicity.

Mechanism of action

Acts as a carrier protein to convert poorly immunogenic polysaccharide antigens into T-cell dependent antigens when covalently linked, enhancing antibody production.
