Overview

Diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid, and acellular pertussis antigens are the active components in combination vaccines (DTaP, Tdap) to prevent diphtheria (caused by *Corynebacterium diphtheriae*), tetanus (caused by *Clostridium tetani*), and pertussis (caused by *Bordetella pertussis*). The diphtheria and tetanus components are inactivated, detoxified toxins (“toxoids”), while the pertussis component consists of purified, important bacterial antigens (such as pertussis toxin, filamentous hemagglutinin, pertactin, and fimbriae) rather than whole bacterial cells. These antigens are not drug targets but are designed to elicit adaptive immunity, mostly antibody-mediated, to neutralize toxins and facilitate clearance of infection if exposure occurs[9][5][7].
