Overview

Diphtheria toxoid is an inactivated form of the diphtheria toxin, produced by *Corynebacterium diphtheriae*, and rendered non-toxic by formaldehyde treatment, preserving its immunogenicity[2][3][5]. It acts as an antigen in vaccines to elicit a protective antibody response without inducing disease. Tetanus toxoid is similarly an inactivated form of tetanus toxin (tetanospasmin), produced by *Clostridium tetani*, detoxified by heat and formaldehyde, and used in vaccines to induce immunity[7]. Both are essential components of combination vaccines used worldwide to prevent diphtheria and tetanus. These toxoids are not drug targets or receptors but are critical immunogens for vaccine-mediated prevention of bacterial infections. Their efficacy is monitored by measuring specific antibody titers, and they are considered to have an excellent safety profile with very rare serious adverse effects[7][5][2].
