Diphtheria Toxoid Protein (DT)

Target
DT
Molecular classification
Toxoid, Vaccine Antigen, Modified Toxin
01

Overview

Diphtheria toxoid is an inactivated (detoxified) form of diphtheria toxin, used as a vaccine antigen to induce immunity against diphtheria. The native toxin is produced by Corynebacterium diphtheriae strains that are lysogenized by specific bacteriophages carrying the tox gene. The toxoid retains immunogenicity but lacks toxicity, making it suitable for safe use in vaccines. Immunization induces neutralizing antibodies that protect against disease caused by natural infection with C. diphtheriae producing active toxin proteins.

Mechanism of action

Induction of neutralizing antibodies against diphtheria toxin. The toxoid form prevents ADP-ribosylation of eEF-2 by eliciting an immune response that recognizes and neutralizes the active toxin.
