Overview

DISC1 intronic transcript 1 (DISC1-IT1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from an intronic region at the DISC1 locus. While the protein-coding gene DISC1 (Disrupted in schizophrenia 1) plays a significant role in neurodevelopment, psychiatric disease risk, and gene regulation in the brain, DISC1-IT1 itself does not encode a protein but may regulate local chromatin structure or DISC1 gene expression. The DISC1 genomic region is subject to complex alternative splicing and intergenic fusions related to psychiatric illness, most notably schizophrenia[1][3]. There are no reports indicating that DISC1-IT1 is a direct therapeutic drug target, nor are there characterized small molecule or biological interactors. Its biological and disease role is mainly inferred from its genomic position and relation to the highly studied DISC1 locus[1][3].
