Overview

Disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain-containing protein 23 (ADAM23) is a member of the ADAM family, structurally related to snake venom disintegrins. Unlike most ADAMs, ADAM23 is non-catalytic: its metalloproteinase-like domain lacks key residues for enzymatic activity. It is predominantly expressed in the brain and functions mainly as an adhesion molecule through a specific interaction with the αvβ3 integrin, promoting neural cell attachment by an RGD-independent mechanism. This protein has implications in cell adhesion, neurogenesis, and tumor progression, especially of neural origin. Evidence suggests ADAM23 is a ligand for integrins and may be involved in mechanisms relevant to cancer and nervous system diseases.
