Overview

Disperse exterior pathogens, often referred to as 'Release the exterior' (Jie Biao), is a traditional therapeutic strategy rather than a specific molecular target, receptor, or enzyme. In clinical practice, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine, it describes the process of expelling exogenous pathogens—such as viruses or bacteria associated with wind, cold, or heat—from the body's superficial layers. This approach is typically employed during the early stages of acute infectious diseases, such as the common cold or influenza, to prevent the progression of the illness into deeper organ systems. The physiological effect is primarily achieved through diaphoresis, which is believed to open the pores and stimulate the peripheral immune response. Because this term represents a broad treatment principle involving multiple biological pathways and botanical compounds, it is not considered a canonical target in modern molecular pharmacology.
