Disulfide Bond in Lens Protein

Molecular classification
Post-translational modification, Protein modification
01

Overview

Disulfide bonds are covalent linkages formed between cysteine residues in lens proteins, primarily crystallins. While contributing to protein stability and structure, aberrant formation or exchange is implicated in age-related changes and cataract formation. These bonds can be formed co-translationally or post-translationally under oxidative stress, leading to protein aggregation and lens opacification. Therapeutic strategies may target the prevention or disruption of aberrant disulfide linkages.
