Overview

Divalent Metal Transporter 1 (DMT1), also known as NRAMP2, DCT1, or SLC11A2, is a proton-coupled symporter responsible for the transport of divalent metal ions across cellular membranes. Its primary function is the uptake of ferrous iron (Fe²⁺), but it can also transport other metals like manganese, cadmium, cobalt, nickel, vanadyl, and lead. DMT1 plays a crucial role in intestinal iron absorption and cellular iron acquisition, particularly in erythroid precursor cells. Expression is regulated by systemic iron levels, and mutations can cause severe anemia. It is explored as a therapeutic target for diseases associated with pathological iron overload.
