Target intelligence / Profile preview
The term Diverse antigens and pathogens refers to a broad and heterogeneous category of biological entities rather than a specific molecular target. It encompasses a wide array of infectious agents, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, as well as the specific molecular components known as antigens that trigger host immune responses (Janeway et al., 2001). In a therapeutic context, this grouping typically describes the scope of broad-spectrum anti-infective agents or multi-valent vaccines designed to provide protection against multiple strains or species (WHO, 2023). Because it does not represent a single receptor, enzyme, or protein, it is not classified as a specific therapeutic target in drug discovery databases. Instead, it serves as a collective descriptor for the various external threats that the immune system or medical interventions aim to neutralize. Drugs interacting with these entities typically aim to inhibit essential life processes of the pathogen, such as cell wall synthesis or nucleic acid replication, or they prime the host's immune system to recognize and eliminate them (StatPearls, 2023). Therapeutic challenges associated with this category include the development of antimicrobial resistance and the potential for off-target effects on the host's commensal microbiota (NIH, 2023).
Neutralization of pathogens, inhibition of microbial replication, or induction of adaptive immune responses (StatPearls, 2023; Janeway et al., 2001).
