Diverse antigens recognized by Fab regions is a broad classification used in pharmacological databases to represent the vast array of molecules targeted by the Fragment antigen-binding (Fab) regions of antibodies (Janeway et al., 2001). The Fab region is the part of an antibody that binds to antigens, composed of one constant and one variable domain of each of the heavy and light chains (NCBI, 2021). This term does not refer to a single protein or receptor but rather to the collective set of epitopes—ranging from proteins and polysaccharides to small molecules—that can be specifically recognized by the paratope of an immunoglobulin (PubMed, 2010). In a clinical context, drugs that utilize this mechanism include monoclonal antibodies and Fab fragments like Ranibizumab or Abciximab, which are designed to bind specific antigens to treat conditions such as macular degeneration or cardiovascular disease (StatPearls, 2023). Because the term encompasses any potential antigen, it is considered a non-specific target classification rather than a distinct biological entity. Consequently, its biological functions and disease roles are as varied as the antigens themselves, spanning immune response, signal transduction, and the treatment of cancer or infections (ChEMBL, 2024).
