Diverse pathogenic antigens is a collective term referring to the vast array of molecular structures—including proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids—presented by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites that are recognized by the human immune system. The interaction between the IgG Fab region and these antigens facilitates several critical immune functions, such as the direct neutralization of viral particles and bacterial toxins, as well as the opsonization of pathogens to enhance their recognition and destruction by phagocytic cells like macrophages and neutrophils [3: https://www.nature.com/articles/nri3443]. While highly effective for treating immunodeficiencies and certain infectious diseases, the non-specific nature of targeting diverse antigens means that therapy is often broad-spectrum rather than precision-based.
The mechanism of action involves the binding of the Fab (Fragment antigen-binding) portion of IgG antibodies to specific epitopes on a wide variety of pathogenic antigens, including bacterial toxins, viral surface proteins, and fungal polysaccharides. This binding results in the neutralization of the pathogen's biological activity, prevention of host cell entry, and opsonization, which facilitates phagocytosis and clearance by the reticuloendothelial system [1, 2].
