DNA is the principal molecular target of alkylating agents. These agents modify DNA bases, primarily guanine, through the addition of alkyl groups. This damage disrupts DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death and is used in cancer treatment and, sometimes, for autoimmune conditions.
