Overview

DNA is the principal molecular target of alkylating agents. These agents modify DNA bases, primarily guanine, through the addition of alkyl groups. This damage disrupts DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death and is used in cancer treatment and, sometimes, for autoimmune conditions.

Mechanism of action

Alkylating agents transfer alkyl groups to DNA bases, leading to cross-linking, strand breaks, and disrupted replication and transcription.
