For instance, many antibiotics target bacterial enzymes or DNA to treat infections, while chemotherapy often targets human DNA or enzymes involved in the cell cycle (PubMed, 2022). However, targeting these essential components often carries risks of systemic toxicity due to the essential nature of these components in healthy cells.
