DNA-binding transcriptional repressor RacR is an essential gene located on the defective rac prophage element in *Escherichia coli* (strain K-12). RacR functions as a repressor protein that negatively regulates the expression of the adjacent ydaS-ydaT operon, which encodes two toxins. Loss or silencing of RacR leads to derepression of these toxins, causing growth inhibition and cell death. RacR thereby promotes cell survival by repressing these genes. Its function is crucial for maintaining cell viability in bacteria that retain the rac prophage, and deletion of racR alone is lethal.
