DNA cytosine-5 methyltransferases (DNMTs) are a family of enzymes that catalyze the transfer of a methyl group to the 5th carbon position of cytosine residues in DNA, resulting in the formation of 5-methylcytosine. This modification is a key epigenetic mark involved in regulating gene expression, maintaining genome stability, and controlling developmental processes. DNMT1 is a maintenance methyltransferase, while DNMT3A and DNMT3B are de novo methyltransferases. Aberrant activity or mutations in these enzymes are associated with various diseases, including cancer and developmental disorders.
