The rpoB gene encodes the β subunit of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RNAP) in bacteria. This enzyme is essential for transcription, catalyzing the synthesis of RNA from a DNA template using ribonucleoside triphosphates as substrates. The β subunit forms part of the RNAP core enzyme, which is responsible for all cellular mRNA synthesis. Mutations in rpoB confer resistance to rifamycin antibiotics by reducing drug binding affinity, making it a clinically significant marker for multidrug-resistant pathogens.
