DNA-directed RNA Polymerase I (Pol I)

Target
Pol I
Molecular classification
Enzyme, RNA Polymerase
01

Overview

DNA-directed RNA polymerase I (Pol I) is a multi-subunit enzyme complex responsible for the transcription of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes in eukaryotic cells. It catalyzes the synthesis of a large precursor rRNA molecule from a DNA template, which is subsequently processed into mature 18S, 5.8S, and 28S rRNAs (in yeast: 18S, 5.8S, and 25S). These rRNAs are essential components of ribosomes and thus critical for protein synthesis.
