Overview

DNA-directed RNA polymerase II subunit RPB1 (RPB1) is the largest and catalytic subunit of RNA polymerase II, the enzyme complex responsible for synthesizing messenger RNA (mRNA) and many functional non-coding RNAs in eukaryotes. It is crucial for mRNA precursor synthesis and its CTD serves as a platform for assembly/regulation by various factors during transcription initiation, elongation, termination, and mRNA processing. In certain viral infections, it can act as an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase.
