DNA-directed RNA polymerase subunit beta is a core component of the multi-subunit DNA-dependent RNA polymerase enzyme complex, which catalyzes the transcription of DNA into RNA. This process uses the four ribonucleoside triphosphates (ATP, GTP, CTP, UTP) as substrates to synthesize an RNA strand complementary to a DNA template. It is a key target for antimicrobial drugs such as rifampicin.
