DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) are a family of enzymes that catalyze the transfer of a methyl group to DNA, primarily at cytosine or adenine bases. This process uses S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) as the methyl donor. Mammalian development requires proper function of all major DNMT enzymes. Aberrant activity or mutation within DNMT genes leads to various diseases including cancer. Demethylating agents have therapeutic potential.
